First Steps

Attend a meeting and see how it works. If it is your first Toastmasters meeting you can attend as a guest for free.

There will be a couple of opportunities to introduce yourself and to speak if you feel comfortable, but it isn’t strictly required.

Observe the meeting to experience how things work, meet a couple of members and ask any questions you may have.

If you decide to speak then the Warm Up is a good opportunity or perhaps Table Topics if you are feeling more adventurous.

Once you have joined as a member it is a good idea to commit to speaking at every meeting to ensure your progression. This can either be in one of the designated meeting roles described on our Regular Meetings page or the next section on Roles and Speeches where we go into a bit more depth and provide guidance, or as a speaker in the Warm Up, Table Topics or in one of the main speaker slots.

Within the first 2 months of joining you should receive a New Member Induction session from a member of the club’s leadership team as described on our Member Orientation page. You should contact the club membership vice president shown here to arrange one if you are yet to have one and wish to book. Alternatively you can fill out the Contact Us form and your query will be directed to the appropriate person.

In the future we hope to design an education review session with a club officer where members can discuss their progress to date and identify any hurdles they are experiencing. In this way members can be encouraged and supported to continue their learning and skill development with an experienced member, and maintain their commitment to their personal development.

If you would benefit from an education review then get in touch. Contact Us.

Next move on to our Roles and Speeches page.
